Set in 1963, Barefoot in the Park follows the lives of newlyweds, Paul and Corie Bratter, as they adjust to married life in a small New York apartment. Paul is a buttoned-down, straight arrow whos wound a little too tight, while Corie is an effervescent, free spirit who wont let anything disturb her romantic bliss. Aside from the five-flight climb and the hole in the skylight, the Bratters must also contend with an eccentric upstairs neighbor, Victor Velasco, who must go through their apartment to get to his. Corie hatches a plot to get her mother together with Mr. Velasco, but the entire evening goes awry and even casts doubt on the viability of the Bratters new marriage. Can this marriage be saved?
Neil Simon is known as one of Americas best-loved playwrights. He is also one of the most prolific, having written several smash hits over the years. Many of his plays have been made into movies, where his natural dialogue and wit translated into hits for them as well. Aside from Barefoot in the Park, some of his works include: The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Come Blow Your Horn, Biloxi Blues, California Suite, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Good-bye Girl, The Odd Couple, and The Sunshine Boys, as well as many others.
Director, Marilyn McCormick, has assembled a fine cast of six talented Humboldt actors. New to the area, Beth Everhart, plays the bubbly newlywed, Corie; Joel Nelson, last seen as Leopold in the Reps, Never the Sinner, plays the straight-laced husband, Paul. Willi Welton and Bob Clark play Cories mom and Victor Velasco, with John Olson and Daniel Lawrence as the telephone repairman and the deliveryman. Production design is in the capable hands of Joe Collins (set and lights), Denise Ryles (costume), Alphonse Cays (sound) and Katherine Bruck (stage management).
