Honk! The Musical, based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Ugly Duckling, is Ferndale Rep's delightful family musical playing July 31 through August 30. Winner of London Theatre's Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2000, Honk! was conceived by the writing team of librettist-lyricist Anthony Drewe and composer George Stiles. Preview performance is July 31 at 8:00pm; all tickets are $5. Performances continue every Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm through August 29 with matinees on Sundays, August 3, 10, 17 and closing Saturday, August 30 at 2:00pm. Thursday, August 28, is our Actor's Benefit Night, where all box proceeds go to the hard working cast and crew. Ticket prices are $12 general and $10 student/senior. Honk! retells the beloved Hans Christian Andersen tale with wonderfully colorful, amusing and imaginative contemporary twists. At the heart of the work is the timeless message of the original story of The Ugly Duckling. In this new version, Ugly's quest to fit in leads him through a series of exciting adventures with an impressive menagerie of spirited farmyard and pond characters. A beautiful and sensational musical score accompanies the story, creating a magnificent and melodious theatre treat for audiences of all ages.
Director Harper Mosley, Assistant Director and Vocal Coach, Elisa Woodruff, Musical Director, Justin Ross and Choreographer, Loene Gossett, have assembled a winning combination of actors and artists. Bryeon Earle is featured in the lead role as Ugly. His mother, Ida Duck, is played by Nanette Voss; Ida's nest-mate Drake is played by Jim Buschmann and Brandon Williams plays the clever and ever-hungry farmyard Cat. Featured in the roles of the many fine-feathered folk and animal friends are Monica Abrahamsen, Caleb Marca, Carol Martinez, Andrew Morgan, Szasha Ozard, Kylie Salas, and Laureen Tipple. Ugly's siblings are Catherine Boers, Lili Buschmann, Michael Martinez, and Derby McLaughlin, with Nochella Ozard and Cassie Rosell as baby farmyard animals.
The show's brilliant designs are the work of Daniel L. Lawrence (Set), Vicki Charlton (Costumes), Gabe Groom (Sound), and Joe Collins (Lights). Lori Tipple is the Stage Manager, assisted by Jessica Barker and Jennifer Stannard.
In conjunction with the opening night on August 1, Art From The Hart will have a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception for the artists in our featured showing, Fantastic Flowers. Steve Garrett and Jim Pastori of Old Growth Cellars have generously donated the wine.
