Anatomy of a Murder is a riveting courtroom drama. The play pits humble Iron Cliffs County lawyer, Biegler, against the hard-headed Lansing-based Assistant Attorney General. An army lieutenant shoots a bar owner for allegedly raping his wife. A trial ensues, in which Biegler attempts to convince the jury that the lieutenant is innocent of first degree murder because he was the victim of an "irresistible impulse". The plot is complicated by the nature of the criminal and defendants, none of whom is purely good or evil, but who all have a complex relationship to the law and to society.

Director, Renee Grinnell, has chosen the film noir look for the show because it lends itself to the ideas which constitute film noir. The anxiety, pessimism and suspicion resulting from World War II and the Cold War can be found in the play's sense of injustice. A woman is beaten and raped, a man murdered, but who's to blame? There is no black and white, no innocent or guilty, no moral outrage. The anatomy of a murder is just that--the dingy realism of a fatal encounter.

Ms. Grinnell has chosen a sensational cast: Gavin Lyall, Dmitry Torarsky, Theresa Ireland, Steve Sterback, Albert Martinez, Jerry Nusbaum, Chrisie Myers, Sam McComber, Karyl Simpson, and Tim Simpson. Production staff includes: Daniel L. Lawrence (set), Emily Blanche (lights), and Vikki Young (costumes). Stage management is in Diane Woodford's capable hands.

We would like to especially thank Spencer Engineering for partial sponsorship of this production. Anatomy of a Murder is a theatrical masterpiece that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Don't miss this gripping tale of deceit and murder, all in a sensational murder trial. For tickets and information, please call (707)786-5483.
