Lettice and Lovage was written in 1987 by Peter Shaffer, the British playwright best known for such hugely popular works as Equus and Amadeus and winner of multiple Tony Awards. Lettice Duffet is an eccentric guide at the most boring historic house in England who uses her imagination to enliven her tours, to the delight of her audiences and to the dismay of her employer Lotte. Lotte fires Lettice, but the two women begin an unlikely friendship based on their refusal to accept the mediocre in modern life. This show charmed audiences in London and New York, where Dame Maggie Smith created the role of Lettice.
Director Renee Grinnell has chosen an experienced cast: Marilyn Foote, last seen as Elaine Wheeler in the Rep's 2004 production, Night Watch, takes on the role of the eccentric Lettice and Marilyn McCormick, Executive Director for the Rep, recreates her role as Lotte from the 1994 Rep production. Supporting cast members are Jim Buschmann as solicitor, Mr. Bardolph, and Wanda Stapp as Lotte's secretary, Miss Framer. Design credits go Daniel L. Lawrence (Set & Light Design), Vikki Young (Costume Design), Daniel L. Lawrence & Renee Grinnell (Sound Design), Dan Tubbs (Poster Design, PR and Cast Photography), and Shannan Dailey (Stage Manager).
Lettice and Lovage is the highly intelligent, raucously funny and deeply moving story of two totally disparate women who, against all odds, become the best of friends and embark on a crusade to change the world. Shaffer's play is his sense of how modern society can leave some of its most creative citizens in the dust, and how "people of spunk [are] condemned to death at the hands of the mere." It is the playwright's personal valentine to the theater, and a reminder that the arts -- whether in the form of exalted language, beautiful buildings or history-infused cities -- must triumph over profit and expedience.
