BANG BANG YOU'RE DEAD

By William Mastrosimone
Directed by Nanette Voss-Herlihy & Victor Howard
Sponsored by the Bertha Russ Lytel Foundation.
Additional support from Chris Brannan Realty, Garberville.

The Ferndale Repertory Theatre's 15th annual All Teen production is a riveting and cautionary tale about school violence. Author William Mastrosimone was inspired to write the play when his son reported that a fellow student at his Seattle area school had scrawled "I'm going to kill everyone in this class and the teacher too" on the blackboard. Though the student said later that it was all a joke, it shook Mastrosimone to the core. "I, like every other parent, understand that our kids are no longer safe anywhere. The national tragedy of kids killing kids sweeps the country and no one, not the schools, not the parents, not the pundits nor the government, has a clue." His play, centered on this theme of youthful violence, has no answers, but is intended to open a dialogue that might derail future school violence with its message of opportunities tragically lost.

There is nothing in this play that either glorifies or glamorizes violence. Instead it focuses upon the lasting consequences of an impulsive violent act for the shooter and the victims, and for their families, friends and communities. Its heartfelt depiction of consequences also argues against suicide; a student in Bend said, "As someone who's considered suicide many times, it really did make me think about what I'd miss if I was dead." The show is an effective indictment of television, movies and video games that desensitize our kids to violence and train them to find amusement in killing. It is also a reminder of the potentially deadly effects of teasing, taunting and ostracizing.

Directors Nanette Voss-Herlihy and Victor Howard have assembled a great ensemble of talented teens including Justin Brown, Brittany Gonzales, Brooke Marino, Michael Roscoe, Sam Cord, Rebecca Rose Morris, Daniel Amaral, Lexus Landry, Haley Brannon, Alison Ehrstrom, and Brittany Travis. Additional support comes from teens Madison Cho, Claire Hull, Nicki Garoutte and Denim Ohmit. Set and lighting design is by Gary Franklin.

Bang Bang You're Dead will play for one weekend at The Ferndale Repertory Theatre, and will also perform at area schools including Ferndale Elementary, Ferndale High, Eureka High, Fortuna High, Zoe Barnum High and McKinleyville High.
