HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical
Lyrics & Book by Gerome Ragni and James Rado Music by Galt MacDermot Directed by Vikki Young, Tom Phillips and Linda Maxwell
Sponsored by Ken Houldsworth, CFP of LPL Financial and Don Brown State Farm Insurance of Fortuna. Additional support from Woodrose Cafe.
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love with this story of young “hippies” in New York City’s east village who band together as a tribe and try to change the world. The show features songs that became hippie anthems, including Age of Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine In and Good Morning Starshine, in an extraordinarily diverse score that includes jazz, country, swing, rock and classical styles.

HAIR broke new theatrical ground with its off-Broadway debut in late 1967. In addition to being the first rock musical, it was the first show to move from off- to on-Broadway and the first to feature a truly integrated cast. It had twice as many songs as the typical musical, and it boldly addressed controversial issues of the day, from war, peace and the draft, to drugs, racism, sexuality, patriotism, and freedom of speech. Multiple attempts to censor the musical led to lawsuits. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually banned any censorship of the production and affirmed the protection of public theatrical performance as free speech.
This production of HAIR brings together a talented ensemble of both familiar faces and newcomers to the Ferndale stage to compose The Tribe: including Jasper Anderton (Berger), Rose Armin-Hoiland, Xochitl Carbajal, Patrick Croft (Claude), Dion Davis, Alison Ehrstrom (Dionne), Sean Gill, Ariel Graham (Margaret Mead), Kim Hodel (Crissy), Anthony Hughes (Hud), Mendie Irvin, Erin Jones-Martin (Sheila), Kyla Kimmel, Yemaya Kimmel, Silas Knight (Woof), Pryncz Lotoj (Ronny), Natasha Martin, Denise Ryles, Laureen Savage (Jeanie), Rigel Schmitt (Walter), and Beth Shipley. They are accompanied by Michael Masumoto on piano, Val Leone on guitar, Justin Vanegas on bass, Bob Higgons on Drums, and Tom Phillips on keyboards.
The Design Team includes Vikki Young (stage direction), Tom Phillips (musical and vocal direction), Linda Maxwell (choreography), Dillon Savage (sound design), Erick Moore (lighting design), Vicki Charlton (costume design), Carolyn Jones (stage management), Katie Pratt, (Light Board Operator), and Denim Ohmit (Sound Technician). Additional support was provided by Bristol Martin (rehearsal accompanist), Gary Franklin (technical direction), Tom Jones (publicity) and Marilyn McCormick (production coordination).
