Art From the Hart Gallery
Quilts by Teresa Hodgson
April 3 - May 17, 2008
Teresa Hodgson has an extensive artistic background in fabric, painting and printmaking, and now specializes in quilts with finely-tuned color and intricate curved designs. Of her work, she says "I am using cloth to inspire, inform, and create my work. My quilts are primarily free
form in design, based on doodles, drawings, on prints, collage in many of its permutations, designs I find
in hand-made fabrics and in my own mind. My quilts employ a unique system of curved seam piecing which
I developed."
Breaking the rules of classical quilting tradition, Teresa firmly believes that anything that one can draw on paper can be made with cloth through quilting. Teresa's quilts have won a number of awards for design and color, and she has taught her unique quilting methods in New Zealand and the western United States, including Alaska. Three Fine Craftswomen: Candy Miller, Terri Tinkham & Barbara Wright
November 15, 2007 - January 19, 2008

Arcata artist Candy Miller creates beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry from polymer clay, often inspired by African and Asian textiles and art. Her technique involves creating long square tubes of clay, called canes, which are combined and then reduced by stretching, turning, cutting and squeezing, to create intricate, highly detailed patterns. Candy began her artistic career in fiber, but discovered "fimo" (the first polymer clay to be widely available) in 1979, and has been working with it ever since.
Trinidad artist Terri Tinkham is a textile artist with a particular love of rich color and texture. For this show, she presents handpainted scarves in satin and velvet devore. She is also a handweaver, working with complex weaves and hand-dyed natural fiber yarns. When Terri is not handweaving or dyeing, she can be found riding her endurance horse, Oliver, at rides across the west. Her work is currently exhibited at the Arcata Artisans Coop.
Trinidad artist Barbara Wright works in glass and mosaic. She started her foray in to glass in 1996, making glass beads with Italian Moretti glass, and participating in major craft shows in San Francisco and Southern California. In 1999 she started making mosaics and in 2002 attended the Sculoa Arte del Mosaico in Ravenna, Italy, learning the old techniques of mosaics. There she was inspired by modern works in the old style and began creating two and three-dimensional pieces using art glass, Smalti, millefiori, tiles and various artifacts. In August 2005 she studied glass techniques in Barcelona, Spain, with Rene Culler and Phillipa Beveridge. both well known glass artists. Her work is currently exhibited at Arcata Artisans Coop and the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino, California.
